JOB OPENING: Social Media and Public Relations Associate, 12-16h/ week

APPLICATION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 18, 2024

INTERVIEWS: WEEK OF DECEMBER 9, 2024

START DATE: JANUARY 15, 2025

EMAIL: INFO@JUSTICE-COLLECTIVE.ORG

Justice Collective, e.V. is a research and advocacy organization working on policing, prisons, and punishment. We focus on how punishment disparately impacts people without resources and from racialized groups. Founded in 2021, we are a young organization, yet already firmly established in the field.

We are hiring a Berlin-based Social Media and Public Relations Associate to create visibility for Justice Collective’s political work, particularly for the Racism on Trial campaign. Racism on Trial documents and resists racism in the so-called justice system. We problematize how the mass criminalization of migrant and racialized communities in Germany works to uphold systemic injustices and stabilizes systems of oppression, such as border regimes and racist exploitation. At a time when politicians and media perpetuate populist narratives about “migrant crime,” the associate’s role in countering such narratives through engaged social media and press work is more important than ever. This position is for one year, with the possibility of extension contingent on funding.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualizing and implementing a cross-platform social media strategy (mainly Instagram and Twitter)

  • Building relationships with supportive press, and responding to or coordinating press requests and releases

  • Conducting regular press reviews and identifying relevant opportunities to counter reactionary coverage of “migrant crime”

  • Building relationships with organizations and individuals across Germany who counter the migrant crime narrative and reject the expansion of punishment and policing

  • Keeping our websites up to date

What we are looking for

  • Knowledge of, and political sensibility toward, anti-racist and/or abolitionist struggles, as well as the ability to communicate these ideas in equitable, accessible language

  • Excellent writing skills in both German and English, sufficient to independently create social media posts in both languages

  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, content management systems and simple design tools like Canva and video editing software

  • While prior knowledge of the specific topics of the project is not required, experience with them and/or related topics (migration, racism, inequality, policing) and/or work in an activism/advocacy context is a plus

Details

The salary is based on TV-L 13, 12 to 16 hours per week.

We do not require formal previous experience in PR or Social Media Management as we recognize these opportunities do not reflect on a candidate's ability to connect with our political organizing. Instead of a cover letter, please send us a 1-2 page document alongside your CV answering the questions below to info@justice-collective.org in one PDF.

Justice Collective is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people from communities impacted bycriminalization and punishment to apply. Please apply even if you don’t think you meet each of the points above! We’re open to people with different skills and experiences.
