POLICY AND RESEARCH ASSOCIATE: JOB DESCRIPTION

Justice Collective, e.V. is a Berlin-based research and advocacy organization, launched in 2021. Justice Collective is committed to ending society’s reliance on policing, prisons, and punishment–and focuses on how punishment disparately impacts people without resources and from racialized groups. In the last months we have provided analysis about criminal justice reform proposals, built a coalition to focus on the topic of high fines and incarceration for low-level offenses, and more.

Justice Collective is hiring a Berlin-based Policy and Research Associate (“Associate”) to lead a project to study how institutional racism manifests in the sentencing of people in Germany’s criminal courts (“Racism in the Courts Project”). Justice Collective is looking for someone with a deep understanding of Germany’s criminal legal system and strong research and writing skills, and who is familiar with managing a project.

REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge: Understanding of the criminal legal system in Germany. The person should know not only the legal structure but also how the system works in practice, including, generally, its inequities.

Academic and Policy Research: Legal, academic, and policy research skills to identify, assess, and use secondary sources relevant for the project. Understanding of how to follow debates within a field, find critical perspectives, and assess sources for their strength and usefulness. Knowledge of Google Scholar and other similar databases and proper citation practices also needed.  Familiarity with relevant authors and organizations a plus.

Empirical Research: Interest in and familiarity with conducting empirical research, including court watching, focus groups, and interviews. This is the largest part of the role in terms of hours. Though experience is not required, it is preferred.

Writing: Excellent writing skills. Experience with different types of writing including policy reports, social media, and other public writing.

Organization: Skilled with managing a project and deadlines including thinking ahead to anticipate project needs and planning accordingly. Working with rest of team to lead project that is thoughtful, and collaborative with other groups and initiatives.

Coalition building: Able to represent Justice Collective in policy and academic panels and other public-speaking contexts; able to build relationships with interested groups, individuals, academics, and media.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Training: Law or Masters-level graduate (sociology, criminology, or related field) with 0 – 5 years of experience. Certification to practice law is not required as this is a research and policy position.

  • Language: Professional-level German and English writing and speaking. Research and writing will be in both languages; working language at Justice Collective is English.

OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS

  • Hours and Timeline: Position will be for ~32 hours per week, compensated at 80% TV-L E13 (pending confirmation of qualifications for that level). Availability of position and exact hours to be finalized upon funding confirmation (expected May 2022). The project is expected to last for three years, starting July 1.

  • Community: Justice Collective is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people from communities impacted by criminalization and punishment to apply.

APPLYING

  • Applications and Deadline: Applicants should submit a CV and cover letter in English, and a writing sample, ideally in English. Submissions to info@justice-collective.org by May 4.

  • Questions: For questions, reach out to Mitali Nagrecha at mitali@justice-collective.org.
